Celebrating National Running Day with a 5k & Giveaway

Happy National Running Day runners! In my opinion, every day should be National Running Day just like every day should be Mother's Day, Father's Day, National Chocolate Day, etc... But since it is an official holiday, I'm happy to celebrate by running (obviously) and having a GIVEAWAY. Yay, right!?!

Tonight, I'll run my first race as a pregnant lady. Oh boy. Not only haven't I raced in a very long time, but running while pregnant has been an experience I hadn't quite anticipated. In a single word, it's been HUMBLING. But that's a whole different post and one I think deserves more attention than a few words so I'll leave it for another day. Tonight's race is the second of the Lehigh Valley Road Runners Summer Series 5k. It's local, it's small, I get to see a bunch of folks I know and some new friends I've made, and there's a pot luck in the park after. But here's the thing. I know I can finish it, but I have no idea how long it might take me and that makes me a bit nervous.
Lehigh Valley Parkway, the scene of tonight's 5k and where I ran 3.5 miles this past weekend
The longest I've run while knowingly pregnant has been 4 miles and that was a while ago but lately, I'm happy if I'm able to run 3 miles and that includes plenty of walk breaks and an occasional bathroom stop. After a ton of soul searching, I've learned to accept that. Even embrace it. I'm letting Baby Reese lead the way and focusing on training for child birth. Racing can wait until after this baby is born healthy and happy. So tonight's race will be just a fun run for me and I'm really looking forward to it. My goal is to finish feeling good and I'm looking forward to seeing what my body can handle. My first trimester was so difficult and I hardly worked out; I was even on bed rest for two weeks and tip toed around nervously after that. Now that I'm feeling better, I'm trying to figure out which portion of the challenges I feel are real and which are residual mental challenges from the first trimester. Tonight should be interesting. I'll report back tomorrow! Hopefully it will indeed be a Happy National Running Day for me!

No onto the second part of celebration... the giveaway! In honor of this very important holiday, I'll be giving away the ESD Run bracelet to one lovely person.

  19. Happy Running Day - and props to you on racing while pregnant! I'm at 33 weeks and running didn't go nearly as well as I'd hoped it would during my pregnancy. I'm celebrating today by wearing my "Running for Two" tank top and I took the dog for a walk this morning. We even ran the last block! Whew!

  21. I ran 3 miles before work this morning and it was my first morning run of the season! I might be tired today just from waking up earlier than normal, but at least I know I don't have to run in the heat and humidity later today.

  26. I celebrated today by logging 3 miles. Nothing crazy, just a regularly scheduled 5:30am meet-up with my best running buddy of 4+ years. We meet up at least twice during the week.

I love that you are listening to your body. I have been a casual runner all of my adult life. Each pregnancy, recovery, and running transition has been different. Surprisingly, my best running years have been after the birth of my 3rd child (my kids are 13, 10, and 3). I'll be turning 38 on Saturday and I'm looking forward to logging many more miles!
