Meet Victoria, our July Inspiration of the Month! She's a high school Cross Country and Track & Field varsity captain who remembers, "It all started with a dream. I wanted to be a runner." From never running to setting records, Victoria knows about perseverance.
As a freshman, Victoria tried out for the track team. Her first timed run was a mile, which she "barely finished in nine minutes." The experience left her discouraged, having been lapped by nearly all her teammates. But her coach saw potential and encouraged her to stay with the team.
That year changed Victoria's life. She grew athletically and personally through her training. It was an opportunity - physically and mentally - to defy limits. In two years, Victoria went from running a nine-minute mile to winning a mile race in 5:35. She then dropped an additional five seconds from her winning time. As a senior, she earned All State distinctions by setting a 5K school record of 19:23 during the Virginia High School League State Cross Country meet.
Victoria remembers, "Something clicked. The fire had been lit, and I couldn't be stopped." Her ranking at the state meet stands as the second-highest state ranking in her school's history. She was awarded the title of Fall All-Area Athlete by her local newspaper, The Free Lance Star. It's an honor that's allowed her to develop into a role model for younger athletes at school.
In the fall, Victoria will be running cross country and track & field for the University of Mary Washington. She looks forward to evolving as a leader in this next phase of her running career. She reflects, "I remind myself every day that no dream is too high, and no boundary cannot be broken."
As her Inspiration of the Month necklace, Victoria chose the ESD Mini Run Charm on a rope chain. It's a reminder how running's changed her life in more ways than she "can possibly express." Her dream's to help other people realize the beauty of the run and teach them to believe in it. Victoria, #YouInspire! We wish you all the best on your journey!
